MARE-Madeira, under the coordination of João Canning Clode, has just joined Marine GEO - an international network of laboratories and research centers, led by the prestigious North American Smithsonian Institution, with the objective of monitoring various coastal habitats and studying changes, interactions and effects of human activity in different geographic regions of the globe. According to a press release released yesterday, the MARE pole in Madeira, brings together a growing team of researchers who focus their interests on the study of habitats and coastal communities, with particular interest in the processes associated with biological invasions and compound effects climate change and human pressure to change communities and marine ecosystems. With a number of ongoing research projects to begin in 2017, the young team has new facilities, including an experimental laboratory at Quinta do Lorde Resort Hotel, which has established a collaboration protocol to house the experimental tanks system, laboratory and cabinets for researchers. With a growing team, new facilities and a laboratory to be established, João Canning Clode, a Smithsonian collaborator since his time in the institution, has promoted in recent years the integration of the research unit into the MarineGEO & Tennenbaum Marine Observatories Network - a collaborative network of different laboratories and research units for the monitoring and study of coastal habitats Under the coordination of the Smithsonian Institution, the network has partners from China, Australia, Hawaii, Canada, Panama USA, implementing a standard approach to long-term monitoring of different habitats - allowing monitoring of these habitats over time in the various regions geographical areas. João Canning Clode commented: "This type of long-term research and monitoring programs are essential to understand ecological processes associated with various factors such as human pressure or changes in climate patterns, and better predict consequences or mitigate scenarios of ocean acidification, increased temperature or increased human pressure induced by activities such as population growth or coastal development. As such, this type of initiative will contribute not only to scientific knowledge but also to the basic knowledge needed for environmental management, marine resource management and optimized and efficient maritime and coastal space planning. " Taking advantage of the visit of Dr. Greg Ruiz, principal investigator of the Smithsonian Institution, MAREMadeira will officially present the integration and program of activities of the MarineGEO network as well as its new facilities and experimental laboratory on Monday, October 16, by 5 pm in Quinta do Lorde Resort Hotel
